🚰 🌆 Johannesburg: Day 10 of ongoing water crisis

Parts of Johannesburg have been without water for more than 10 days and it is unclear when the water supply will be returned.

Johannesburg Water, the utility company run by the city, said in a statement on Monday that part of the problem was due to increased demand due to the warmer weather.

The city has sent out water tankers to the affected areas.

In April, the manager of innovation and technology at Johannesburg Water said that it would take more than 10 years to upgrade and fix the city's water infrastructure.

Hundreds of thousands of residents are currently without water.

The Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice has published its annual ranking of the 50 most violent cities in the world – with Nelson Mandela Bay (Gqeberha) leaping past Cape Town and Durban to be ranked as the most dangerous city in South Africa.

South African cities also carry the dishonour of outranking many of the cities by the sheer number of murders on record. The only city with more murders than Johannesburg (3,084) is Haiti's Port-au-Prince (3,502).

🇿🇦 South Africa's main opposition party not ruling out deal with ANC

South Africa's second most popular party the Democratic Alliance (DA) would not rule out a deal with the ruling African National Congress should the ANC fail to get the majority it needs to retain power in May elections, its leader said.

Pollsters expect the ANC to lose its legislative majority on May 29.

If that happens, President Cyril Ramaphosa or a successor for the top job would be unable to stay on without a coalition, since South Africa's parliament elects the president.

"It would depend which ANC you're dealing with and what their programme of action is," DA leader John Steenhuisen said, declining to disclose whether any talks had already taken place.

"I'm not ruling out anything, depending on what the election results are."

🟨🟩 ANC attempt to block MK party struck down by court

The African National Congress took their ex-leader's party to the Electoral Court to stop them from using the ANC's military wing's name and likeness.

Ex-ANC leader and former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma is the face of the party and is expected to cut deep into the ANC's supporter base in the upcoming elections, especially in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Polling data suggests the ANC will lose its majority for the first time since 1994.

The court ordered that MK is allowed to contest the elections.
🇿🇦 South Africa’s National Assembly Backs Draft Expropriation Bill

Lawmakers from South Africa’s ruling African National Congress voted in favor of newly drafted legislation that would allow the government to seize land without compensation in the public interest.

The Expropriation Bill, considered by lawmakers just weeks before the country votes in elections on May 29 in which the ANC is at risk of losing its national majority, will now pass to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who must sign it for the draft to become law.

The draft bill was opposed by the main opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters, though for different reasons.

The DA claim the draft is unconstitutional and said they will urge Ramaphosa not to sign it. The EFF said it didn’t go far enough.

📝 Despite this bill being described as a "land expropriation" focused piece of legislation, the actual wording does not define what property means. In fact, Section 25 of the Constitution explicitly states that "property is not limited to land" and therefore anything that you own can and will be taken by the government if they choose to.

The bill also defines "public interest" as anything that can "redress the results of past racial discrimination" which, again, is such an empty statement that can be used to easily justify the removal of your property as it rests on very subjective claims.
